Gili Islands Snorkeling Trip
The three Gili islands are still excellent for snorkeling despite the devastation wreaked by the El Nino weather phenomenon in 1998. Some 90% of the hard corals around the islands down to 20 meters suffered badly at the time from bleaching and are still recovering.

While you can snorkel directly from the beach, a good deal is to join the daily snorkeling tour at the very reasonable rate of Rp35,000 per person. As the boat has a glass bottom, those unable to snorkel, such as young kids, can also have the opportunity to see a wide array of beautiful multicolored tropical fish and, if lucky, even the odd turtle. A tip here: bring your own snorkeling gear as the quality of the stuff available for hire leaves much to be desired.

Nothing can be as relaxing as floating amidst a beautiful coral reef watching the undersea life, join our boat crew for a short ride to one at the nearby island reefs. Giant sea turtles and schools of Indo Pacific reef fish are abundant.

After snorkeling our boat crew will land you on one of the Gili’s (Indonesian for Island). The Gili Islands are famous for their white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters. Here you can relax, swim along the fringing reef or take a ride around the island using one of the local pony and cart. Gili Island snorkeling trips disembark from our Jetty two times per day.

When you need a break from the snorkeling, the sugary white beaches are a perfect place for relaxation and sunbathing. The few hawkers that ply their trade here are much less aggressive than in Bali, and when they realize you don’t want what they are selling they quickly get the message. If the blazing tropical sun becomes too much to bear, shelter can be found under the palm trees that conveniently line the beaches.

If the weather is good – which it usually is – beautiful red sunsets can be seen, with the sun setting in the west over Mount Agung, Bali. Either head for Gili Trawangan’s northern coast else climb the island’s 100-meter hill (going up here is the only time you are likely to venture into the island’s interior during your stay).

As for Gili Air and Gilo Meno, they are even quieter than Gili Trawangan. Accommodations and restaurants are basic, but then that’s part of the charm. If you need more facilities, it’s more convenient to stay on Gili Trawangan and make day trips to these two islands.

The waterfall look likes a big net which is spread out, that’s way it’s called Benang Kelambu in local language Sasak. It’s about 40m of height and have two graded irregularly. The dense of herbs make it seem more naturally.

Senaru Panorama & Waterfalls Hiking
Led by local women guides, this easy half-day walk explores the foothills of spectacular Rinjani volcano in Lombok’s northern district of Bayan. Starting near the border of Gunung Rinjani National Park, your route follows old pathways amongst shady bamboo groves and village gardens before entering a wide, open landscape of rice terraces and palms.

Following a winding irrigation channel you reach the lush rainforest of the famous Sendang Gila Waterfall Reserve. The local people believe that a refreshing bath behind these thundering falls can cure any disease. Along the way, discover tropical plants as your guide explains how the local people make practical use of them. You come across the cheeky long tailed monkeys and, with a bit of luck, may even spot the rare ebony leaf monkey.

Passing small hamlets where age-old traditions are practiced, you will gain insight into the colorful village life of the Sasak. There is always something interesting happening here as you meet local people and admire traditional houses along the way.

Make sure you bring your camera – the views are simply spectacular!
On a clear day you may even catch a glimpse of Bali’s famous Gunung Agung volcano rising high above the blue waters of the Lombok Strait. Each turn of the track offers new vistas as finally Rinjani – the sacred mountain of the Sasak people – emerges majestically above rice terraces and rainforest.

This natural and cultural diversity makes the Senaru Panorama Walk an unforgettable Lombok experience.

Leisure and Activities:
The main attraction why people come to Sembalun is climbing the Peak of Mount Rinjani. It saves climbers lots of time compared to coming from other route.

Rinjani is the second highest active volcano in Indonesia. Its 3726m is so challenging and its crater lake is beautifully fantastic!!! Save lost of energy and loads of patient to get there

Like in most mountains they usually have water falls. This one in Sajang the village next to Sembalun also has some. There are three falls stand close by from each other from the highest to the lowest one. The one in the picture is the second highest. Something special about these water falls is that the mud from their river is believed to have cosmetic substance which could make your skin stay healthy and young. Then we named it Stay Young Waterfall.

If Rinjani is too tiring for you try to climb one of the surrounding lower mountains in Sembalun. One of them is Mount Pergasingan. it’s around three hours climbing.

This mountain used to be a place for growing garlic what Sembalun used to be famous for. And after the harvest the men played top – spin or Gasing in local language at the empty garlic field. That is how the mountain got its name for.

If you driving from east route stop by at Pusuk Pass on the way to Lembah Rinjani. Feel the air, listened to the peaceful sound of the forest, and marvel at the mountainous and Sembalun Bumbung valley scenery. Best view at around 4 pm.

Despite its sour taste and tomaty texture (that is many local say about it) strawberry has been popular in Sembalun in the last years. There are some places that you can visit and buy and we usually go to Armasih. This place is easy to reach, the background is beautiful (looks nice for pictures), the owners are friendly they let you taste and help with the picking which is so fun, and they also sell local hand weaving.

Need for an easy walk, beautiful view? Choose this village walk which takes you around vegetable and red rice field and old village / Desa Beleq where the first inhabitants of Sembalun used to live. Get ready for a little bit ‘adventure’ such as crossing shaky bamboo bridge like the one in the picture

Some villages in Lombok still retain their weaving tradition including Sembalun. While you were with us you may learn how to weave in one of the local weavers.

At least once in our life time some of us would like to try something different from what we do and what we have at home. Volunteering is one of the reasons some young people from around the globe come to stay in Sembalun. Share, live and work with the local. Experience, understand and appreciate local culture. This is one of the paths to be able to live harmoniously together in this colorful world. An experience for a better planet.

The only apple orchard in Lombok, Famous among the local. You can view borderless Mount Rinjani from the place.

Most kids who come love the natural surrounding and love being outdoor. What about having a Boy Scout on holiday? It is so fun.

Fresh air, scenic view, friendly people, peaceful place are a very nice place to have for gathering with friends & colleagues. Bring your guitars to have more merry holidays.

If you wander around the village you may meet men gather around and play gasing. Stop by and join the crowd.

Relax on your porch reading or doing nothing. Watch the sight of Rinjani and listen to the sound of Sembalun.

Besides spending time on leisure, Sembalun has a lot to offer. there are some to discover. You can do a research perhaps? Some people have done in nematology and ornithology. Perhaps you could be one of the researchers we meet there.

The Horizon is a special place at the foot of the majestic Mount Rinjani. With sweeping views from the mountain to the ocean The Horizon offers fantastic local cuisine as well as comfortable accommodation

When you visit Senaru, be sure to dine at The Horizon Restaurant to sample the best food on the mountain as well as the unique and wonderful tastes of regional Lombok food.

Grab a seat in the outdoor restaurant and take in the views from mountain, valley to the ocean. Lunch, dinner, a snack or a drink: The Horizon can cater for whatever you’d like.

And because we are a locally owned business, you can visit us and meet people who work and live in the village, and know that whatever you spend with us is money straight back into our local village economy.

The Horizon Senaru Homestay

This simple but comfortable villa offers private accommodation with two bedrooms. You may book the whole villa or guests can choose to stay in one of the bedrooms. We recommend you choose the master bedroom, which boasts a magnificent view of the valley and mountain. The master bedroom is adjacent to a comfortable living room with expansive views of the mountain and valley.

You can choose to take your meals in the living room or in the Horizon Restaurant that also offers terrific views.

The second bedroom at the rear of the villa has its own bathroom and can be booked separately.

Both bathrooms offer guests the experience of a traditional ‘mandi’ or shower. With hot water supplied from the restaurant you can freshen up after a long day’s soft trekking or after a mountain climb.

The best food on the mountain…

The Horizon offers the best food on the mountain. But we would say that wouldn’t we? We happen to think it’s true though!

We encourage you to be adventurous with the food. We encourage you to try the regional menu – just ask the staff and they’ll happily prepare and serve you some wonderful regional cuisine cooked the way it’s done for the locals. Some of it can be quite spicy so be sure to let them know if you’re not a fan of chilli, most of the dishes can be adjusted to mild – but if you are a fan of chilli, you’ll love what’s on offer.

The tempeh and tofu (soya bean cake and curd) is prepared simply and tastes great. Have it with greens (picked fresh from the garden) for a light but filling meal.

Local vegetables include spinach, lettuce, snake beans, kangkung (water spinach), potatoes, sweet potatoes, casava, corn and carrots. These are cooked in a variety of ways, all delicious and suitable as an accompaniment or on their own with rice.

Baked chicken with rice is another favourite. Spicy and simple.

The Horizon does have a western menu and you’ll find toasted sandwiches, and other favourites but we strongly recommend sampling the local food – after all it’s what they are best at making. If you really can’t bring yourself to go regional, then the cook at The Horizon will be happy to prepare pasta for you. Made fresh on the premises, it comes served with a delicious tomato sauce.

Finally, all of the food is sourced locally and as much as possible is grown in the garden on the property. So you can be sure that what your eating is fresh.

Take a seat in the outdoor restaurant and take in the views from mountain, valley to the ocean. Lunch, dinner, a snack or a drink: The Horizon can cater for whatever you’d like.

In the mountain village of Senaru, Lombok is a small restaurant called The Horizon. It is run by Ayu, a friendly and welcoming host – she also happens to be, in our opinion, the best cook in town. She cooks the most wonderful regional cuisine but for the less adventurous can whip up Indonesian classics like nasi goreng or more western style dishes.

The restaurant is clean and the staff friendly. Ayu can also help you with mountain climbing arrangements if you want to take up the challenge and climb Mt Rinjani – Indonesia’s second highest peak.

There will also be accommodation available on site by the end of 2008, but for now Ayu can put you in touch with other accommodation options in Senaru.
